There’s always something else to browse on the redesigned Facebook unveiled today. Instead of churning through the main feed until you hit reruns and leave, Facebook hopes to keep you switching between Photos, Music, and All Friends feeds so you stick around. The design previewed at Facebook’s HQ today was actually stripped down, but I got the rollout early, so here’s what it really looks like.

Facebook said it will be slowly and cautiously rolling out the redesign so it can get feedback as it goes, but over the next few weeks users get on facebook will see a banner announcing “Coming Soon: Less Clutter, More Stories” with a button to give it a try. The mobile app changes that mirror the website will be available in the next few weeks, too.

Once you’re in, the first thing you’ll notice is the big black left sidebar. It holds the standard bookmarks from before, but also lodges the Chat buddy list at the bottom, stealing it from where it used to be on the right side of the screen. Depending on your screen size and resolution, the bar will be minimized and only show bookmark icons and friends’ faces for chat instead of their titles and names too. Stories in the news feed are much bigger now. In fact, photos are almost as large as when you click through to view them by themselves. Overlaid text about who posted the photos and who Liked them frees up this extra feed space. The thumbnail images and blurbs of shared links are bigger, so you’ll know more about the website you’re about to click to.

The most important part of the new design are the content-specific feeds. Available from a chooser in the top right where Birthdays used to be, you can select to look at feeds on “All Friends,” “Photos,” “Music,” “Games,” “Following [Pages and public figures],” and any friend or interest lists you’ve created. Ads, birthdays, requests, and other right-hand sidebar stuff has been pushed downward.

Facebook already feels more addictive to me. My typical loop on the Internet was Twitter, email, and then browsing down the Facebook news feed until I saw what I’d seen last time I visited. Now when I hit the wall, instead of bouncing I’m inclined to go discover new music, check out photos from friends, or read interesting articles from the journalists I subscribe to.

In the end, the redesign means Facebook can give us more to look at, get more time spent on the service after unblock facebook so it can show us more ads, and better accomplish its mission of connecting the world — but in a more personalized way where the users are in control.

Click on each of the pictures when it displays in the “Edit Pictures” screen, and type in your name to tag yourself in each of the pictures. Pictures don’t display in the row above your profile wall unless you are tagged in them. Do not tag yourself in the photo that’s meant to be set your profile picture, if one exists. Click “Save Changes.”
Return to your profile, and choose “Photos” again. Scroll down to “Photos Of You” and if necessary, re-arrange the photos that appear on the screen by dragging them around until they are in the appropriate sequence.get on facebook

“At a high level, we’re trying to help each person to get exactly the posts they want, and that differs from person to person,” Christopher Cox, vice president of product at Facebook, said in an interview. “The tricky part for Pages and content publishers on a large scale is that on the one hand, [there's] too much page spam in my feed, and on the other hand, I want everybody to see every post I have. “What we’re trying to do is move the front page forward in a way that minimizes the amount of spam people feel they’re getting, but also helps publishers increase their audience,” Cox said. “The nice thing is that with the Following feed is that you’re going to have a place where people can go and check out the people that they’re following. And it will be easier for a journalist to say, ‘You want to see my stuff? Go here.’”

As Cox said publicly, the main News Feed will also include posts from people and publishers that a user has historically engaged with. “So if you typically click on a lot of Thomas Friedman posts, you’ll still see a lot of Thomas Friedman,” Cox said.  Unblock facebook

Placing publishers, friends, “close friends”, and others in their own feeds is certainly reminiscent of another social network, Google+, which uses the concept of user-grouped “Circles” to organize what its users see. Facebook’s new Feeds are a step back in the direction of algorithmic choice, in that Facebook is still deciding what content to surface to the user. But by also organizing them by topic, Facebook is aligning more with its users, and how they search for social media.

The problem, of course, is that the new feeds really don’t eliminate the personal “pay-to-play” problem, where a user that is desperate to tell the world that his cat is missing, for example, can’t be sure that all of his friends and family will actually see the post. Facebook is apparently marking down gifts from its marketplace in order to get more people to use it. Not only that, but you’ll also be given the option to “give a gift” whenever your friends get a new job, a promotion, or give birth to a child. Facebook is going to great depths to market its own marketplace. Perhaps it should utilize its own, newly updated custom audiences tool. It could benefit from better targeted marketing, and it can’t really boast about the success rate of its tool if its own marketplace isn’t doing so well. access facebook

The mark downs were discovered by CNET, and they seem to appear when you want to send a gift to a friend for their birthday. It seems a bit desperate because the message that you’re greeted with is, “Send a gift of $5 or more and get $4 off.” That’s a whopping 80% markdown. Yes, the company is willing to lose money in order to get more people to try out their marketplace, which they hope in the future will bring in the returns it had lost. Facebook’s marketplace doesn’t generate the revenue it wants, so its hoping these specials will turn that around.

Alongside essentially turning part of its marketplace into a Dollar Tree store, Facebook is trying various methods to get its marketplace some publicity. Special sales will emerge around certain holidays, like Christmas or Valentine’s Day, and there will most likely be sales centered around the seasons (keep an eye out during Spring and Summer time). Since before Facebook’s initial public listing in May last year, the company has been questioned over how it intends on increasing revenue received from advertising. Facebook has now answered this question, and users are not happy.

Until now, many larger companies have ignored Facebook as an advertising media due to format and size restrictions. In a recent presentation, Facebook’s founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted that “advertisers want really rich things like big pictures or videos” – a feature which Facebook has not provided historically. Facebook has recently purchased the Atlas ad server from Microsoft, hoping to provide major advertisers such as McDonald and American Express with key data to help justify their spending.

While the acquisition from Microsoft has the potential to greatly increase Facebook’s revenue, an increase in ads will likely be enough to see your friends finally hit the ‘Delete’button – perhaps making the switch to rival Twitter instead. There are more than 1 billion people have accessed Facebook, and company officials selected Hernando as one of 30 cities across the nation to conduct its “Small Business Boost” program aimed at helping small businesses throughout the country acquire and retain customers.
Johnson said the city gets on Facebook all the time, including a post last week to warn the public of emergency repair work on a natural gas line. He said many residents use Facebook rather than email to communicate with City Hall. “A lot of people, for whatever reason, feel more comfortable communicating via unblocking Facebook to chat,” Johnson said.
U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, an avid Facebook user himself, helped facilitate the visit to Hernando’s Gale Center Monday. Wicker said he and his wife Gayle toured Facebook’s international facilities not long ago and were fascinated by the company’s global network, adding it was all “a little over his head.” Looking over the large crowd which came out to attend the seminar, Wicker stated the obvious.
“This shows a great deal of interest, an outpouring of interest, among small businesses,” Wicker said. Wicker spoke of the partnership between Facebook, the National Federation of Independent Business, the City of Hernando, the National Chamber of Commerce and local organizations like the Hernando Main Street/Chamber of Commerce.
Wicker said Mississippi’s economic officials “love it” when a Nissan or Toyota comes to town, “but the fact remains 97 percent of our employers are small businesses.”
“If we are going to get out of the financial doldrums we’re in, we’ll do it through Facebook,” Wicker said. “I use Facebook every day as a policy maker. We used Facebook every day during the campaign. Constituents let me know what they are thinking.”
Brooke Oberwetter, Associate manager, Policy Communication at Facebook in Washington, D.C., called the present decade, the 2010′s, as the “Age of Discovery.”
She called Facebook as the main chronicler of the “story of our lives.”
“People spend a great deal of time curating their existence on Facebook,” Oberwetter said. “There are 1 billion people connected on Facebook, with more than 2 billion posts a day,” Oberwetter said. “There are 3.2 million daily connections in Mississippi.”
Businesses can use Facebook to “build loyalty, acquire new customers and generate word of mouth,” about a product or business,” Oberwetter said. Facebook will soon launch its “graph search” which will help revolutionize the information industry.

In an attempt to breathe new life into Facebook’s News Feed, the company will introduce new controls that allow people to sort streams of photos and other material into organized sections.

Previous tweaks to the News Feed have triggered howls of protest among Facebook’s users. Hoping to minimize the grousing this time around, Facebook intends to roll out the changes in phases. It will probably be six months to a year before everyone who accesses Facebook on a personal computer sees the revamped News Feed, the company said. The new features will enable users to choose to see streams of content that may feature nothing but photos or posts from their closest friends, family members or favorite businesses. Or they can just peruse content about music, or sports, as if they were grabbing a section of a newspaper. Other newspaper-like changes will include lists of events that users’ social circles have flagged for the upcoming weekend and other summaries meant to resemble a table of contents.
Bigger pictures also will give advertisers a larger canvass to make their marketing pitches. Facebook is hoping marketers will seize the opportunity to develop more creative ways to entice and intrigue customers so advertising can become a more acceptable fixture on the social network.

The makeover is partly prompted by complaints about increasing clutter on Facebook’s network.

As Facebook has grown to more than 1 billion users, the amount of content that users and companies post to the website has surged. Users get on Facebook only see a small portion of that content, culled by Facebook’s proprietary algorithm.

In recent months, some companies and users, including entrepreneur Mark Cuban, have grumbled that their content was not getting enough exposure in the newsfeed, because Facebook gives paid ads priority in the newsfeed.

Facebook’s vice president of product, Chris Cox, acknowledged that there was “more pressure on the system” to feature the various content, as Facebook has grown in size.

The additional newsfeeds provide more opportunities for content to appear in front of users. A photos-only feed displays pictures shared by a user’s connections they access Facebook as well as on Facebook-owned Instagram and other photo apps that are integrated with the social network.

A revamped version of an existing but little-used Music feed aggregates the songs that a user’s friends are listening to, and includes posts from bands and performers in which a user has expressed an interest.

Facebook also introduced a “Friends Only” feed that displays every message shared by a user’s friends in chronological order — rather than chosen by an algorithm — as well as a “Following” feed that gathers posts from news publishers, celebrities, sports teams and other groups or businesses that a user subscribes to.

“The basic idea is sometimes you want five minutes and you want to see the top stuff, sometimes you want to spend an hour and go through a lot of different stuff,” Cox said in an interview after the event.   facebook bypass proxy server

Before teenaged Facebook users in particular start panicking, it is worth highlighting that just because a patent is filed, or even granted, it may have no bearing on a company’s future direction. However, at the same time, Facebook is no longer a small word-of-mouth website that people stumble upon. It currently has 1.01 billion users and is a publically listed company. And once a company is on the stock exchange, it has an obligation to make money for its shareholders.
Amazon has toyed with the freemium business model for a number of years. Kindle Fire owners can pay a premium at the time of purchase to eradicate ads from their web browsing, while Amazon Prime customers pay a yearly fee to guarantee next-day delivery and benefit from a number of multimedia services such as free video streaming and book borrowing.
The researchers claim that changes to page layout and to default settings may have led users to think something they posted or shared was private when in fact it was public.
“These findings highlight the tension between privacy choices as expressions of individual subjective preferences, and the role of the network environment in shaping those choices,” said Alessandro Acquisti, one of the researchers. “While people try to take control of their personal information, the network keeps changing, affecting their decisions and changing their privacy outcomes.”
